Yoshi is a resident of the Mushroom Kingdom, and a close friend to Mario and Luigi. He is one of the main protagonists of Super Mario Bros. Z, attempting to prevent Metallix from collecting the Chaos Emeralds.

Biography[]

Appearance[]

Yoshi is a green dinosaur-like creature with a white underbelly, a large round snout, a row of orange spines along his head, orange boots, and a shell-shaped saddle on his back.

Personality[]

Yoshi is known to be like Mario in terms of personality, being brave and kind. Having known Mario and Luigi for years, he is one of their closet and most loyal friends. Yoshi is also a friendly individual who always lends a helping hand to those in need. This is shown in his debut episode, The New Threat, when he decides to aid the Mario Bros. in their task to help Sonic and Shadow to reclaim the Chaos Emeralds that ended up in his dimension.

One of Yoshi's most notable qualities is his bravery and willingness to stand up to and fight enemies much larger than himself, such as Bowser, throughout his adventures with the Mario Bros. His courage is shown again during his encounter with Metallix. Despite Metallix threatening his life and later attacking him for the White Chaos Emerald, Yoshi refused to give it up. Yoshi even went as far as to belch in Metallix's face in response to his threats and later engage him in a full-on fight.

History[]

Metallix Saga[]

Yoshi joins Mario and the rest of the heroes in their search for the Chaos Emeralds, accompanying Luigi after the group splits up to cover more ground. After a while of searching, Luigi comes across the White Chaos Emerald, but it is stolen by Wario and Waluigi, who escape in the Wario Car. After a futile attempt to stop them, Luigi is kicked from the vehicle by Waluigi, hitting the ground several times before landing on Yoshi's saddle.

Unwilling to give up without putting up a fight, Luigi gives Yoshi a Dash Pepper in order to give chase. Surprisingly seeing this, Wario orders Waluigi to stop them, and the wily doppelganger begins to throw a volley of Bob-ombs at them. Undeterred, Yoshi continues to give chase, avoiding the falling bombs as Luigi manages to send one back, destroying the Wario Car and forcing the Wario Bros. to escape on foot.

Yoshi continues to give chase to the dastardly duo, eventually chasing them uphill and cornering them on a cliffside, as the Dash Pepper finally wears off. Yoshi attempts to pry the Chaos Emerald from their hands using his super sticky tongue, but this only results in the four getting into a scrap. It eventually turns into a tug-of-war, but the fighting is ultimately halted by a pair of missiles, which send the Wario Bros. blasting off into the horizon. Consequently, Luigi finds Yoshi hanging for dear life off the side of the cliff, clutching the Chaos Emerald closely. Luigi sprints and dives to save the dinosaur, but it is too late to catch him, as Yoshi plummets to the woods below.

Yoshi lands hard into the woods, and manages to reclaim the White Chaos Emerald. Before he can figure a way out of the woods, Metallix arrives and demands the Chaos Emerald from him. Yoshi refuses to hand the Emerald over, earning Metallix's ire and prompting him to attack. Yoshi is punched and sent flying through several trees before crashing into a wall. He gets up quick enough to watch Metallix trying to retrieve the Chaos Emerald. Using his tongue, Yoshi snatches the Emerald before Metallix does, and places it in his mouth. Metallix demands Yoshi to spit the Chaos Emerald out. Despite having his life threatened, Yoshi boldly swallows the Emerald and belches in Metallix's face. Amused, but unfazed, Metallix decides to simply kill Yoshi and take the Chaos Emerald from his 'mutilated carcass'. Yoshi then uses his Egg Roll and escapes as he is hounded by an onslaught of bullets from Metallix's arm-mounted mini gun. He barely manages to escape the line of Metallix's mini gun fire. However, Metallix fires four missiles from his missile launcher on his shoulder, with the missiles striking Yoshi in his Egg Roll. Metallix catches up to Yoshi before kicking him to the air, and uses a combination of V. Maximum Overdrive Attack and Homing Attack techniques to send him crashing hard into the ground leaving Yoshi unconscious. However, as soon as Metallix starts to approach the seemingly defeated Yoshi, the White Chaos Emerald in his stomach suddenly begins to shine, causing the stomach to drastically agitate, while Yoshi wakes up and suddenly powers up due to involuntarily managing to tap into the energy of the Chaos Emerald; thus transforming into Chaos Yoshi. With the power of the Chaos Emerald enhancing his strength and speed, allowing him to fly, while enveloping him in a golden aura, Yoshi manages to overwhelm Metallix by throwing explosive eggs at him. However, Metallix was only angered and annoyed by Yoshi's offense, and taps into the power of the Blue Chaos Emerald located in his reactor core on his chest. He uses the Chaos Energy in order to dominate and brutally torture Yoshi by far. Yoshi, who received severe damage and a black eye in battle, manages to try to catch Metallix with his tongue in order to swallow him and turn him into a big Yoshi egg, with the egg ready to explode due to the Yoshi's Chaos form. Witnessing this, Yoshi throws the egg with the robot inside at a nearby cliff, with the big egg making a massive energy blowout upon impact, seemingly destroying the evil robot.

Yoshi manages to survive from the explosion. Feeling no traces of Metallix's presence, the severely injured and exhausted dinosaur believed that he has emerged victorious from the fight, while trying to leave the battle zone full of rubble. But shortly afterwards, Yoshi hears a frightening sound from the huge inferno behind him, with the demonic robot coming out of the ravaging fire with clear intentions to kill displaying in his glowing red eyes. Yoshi tries to escape in anguish and horror, but Metallix blocks his way. Yoshi tries to catch him with his tongue again, but the robot manages to catch his tongue and gives Yoshi a prolonged brutal beating. Metallix throws Yoshi into a cliff by rapidly releasing his tongue, and savagely strikes Yoshi in his stomach by copying his Ground Pound, causing him to spit out the White Chaos Emerald while Metallix quickly catches it and teleports it into his reactor core for storage. To make the beatings even more brutal, Metallix proceeds to power up with both the Blue and White Chaos Emeralds via his Redline technique, and launch wild blows at the dinosaur, following by taking him high into the air and savagely throwing him with gigantic force to the cliff, destroying the particular cliff and thus ending the battle.

However, despite receiving life-threatening injuries, Yoshi survives, but he moves by crawling with much effort. Metallix, who witnessed how the dinosaur is still alive, approaches and grabs him by the neck. Suddenly, Metallix decides to fatally punish Yoshi for his opposition and refusal of giving him the Chaos Emerald by strangling him to death. As Metallix sadistically enjoys Yoshi's slow and agonizing death, he suddenly releases him when he detects the approach of Sonic and Shadow accompanied by Mario and Luigi. Irate, Metallix decides to fight for a moment, but then changes his mind and searches the other Chaos Emeralds instead, so the robot flies away.

With Yoshi being left lying on the ground half-dead, Mario and Luigi found him as Mario examines the heavily injured dinosaur, while Luigi cries out of worry and grief. Infuriated by this, Mario demands from Sonic the truth about Metallix and what happened to Yoshi. Sonic agrees about providing Yoshi with medical assistance despite Shadow's protest, to which Mario and Luigi grab Yoshi and fly out of the battle area.

Powers and Abilities[]

Like the rest of his species, Yoshi has a long, prehensile sticky tongue that he uses to eat just about anything, including things much larger than himself. He can transform the enemies and any other objects he eats into eggs, which he can use as a projectile.

Yoshi has the ability to flutter-jump, which allows him to cover a great amount of horizontal distance. He is also proficient with the ground-pound.

As seen in The New Threat, Yoshi is adept in hand-to-hand combat. When empowered by the White Chaos Emerald and fighting Metallix, Yoshi used strong punches and kicks to fight Metallix off and even knock him into the ground and rubble at times. With the use of his tongue, Yoshi can grapple enemies from distances, pull them in close before engaging them in close combat.

Transformations[]

Dash Yoshi[]

After consuming a Dash Pepper, Yoshi turns orange and gains the ability to run much faster than he otherwise could. When utilizing it's effects, he is even capable of running up steep hills, up vertical faces and even on water during a restricted amount of time.

Chaos Yoshi[]

After tapping into the power of the Chaos Emerald he had swallowed, Yoshi became enveloped with a yellow aura. In this state, Yoshi's physical abilities were greatly enhanced and he gained the ability to fly. The eggs he laid also began to create massive energy explosions after a brief amount of time.

Super Star Yoshi[]

Using the power of the Star Rod[1], the Star Spirits unlock Yoshi's true power from within, allowing him to transform into Super Star Yoshi. In this form, his skin takes on a golden color and sprouts a pair of wings. His abilities are currently unknown, though it is implied to be powerful enough to fight against Metallix.

Techniques[]

  • Flutter Jump - By rapidly moving his legs, Yoshi can prolong his descent in the air and cover a significant amount of horizontal distance. The technique can also be used offensively in the form of a rapid kick. The technique first appeared in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.
  • Ground Pound - When in the air, Yoshi slams his rear end down as an offensive maneuver. Yoshi was first shown to use this technique in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.
  • Egg Roll - Yoshi forms a large egg around himself and proceeds to roll inside of it. This technique first appeared in the Super Smash Bros. series. Yoshi first used it to evade Metallix's gunfire and attempt to flee from him.
  • Egg Throw - Yoshi's signature move, which first appeared in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Yoshi tosses an egg at an opponent as a projectile attack. The move was significantly enhanced when Yoshi tapped into the power of the Chaos Emerald in The New Threat, with the eggs creating massive energy blasts after being thrown.
  • Back Aerial - Using his tail, Yoshi strikes his opponent. This technique first appeared in Super Smash Bros. Melee.
  • Gravity Bash - Holding one of his empowered eggs in his hand, Yoshi charges at his opponent and blasts the egg at point-blank range against them, resulting in a massive explosion. This attack was used against Metallix during their battle. This technique first appeared in Dragon Ball Super: Broly, where it was used by Goku.
  • Lick Twister - Yoshi stretches his tongue and uses it as an extra limb, allowing him to grab a hold of Metallix around the latter's waist and throw him. This technique was used by Buyon and Tambourine in Dragon Ball.
  • Spear - Yoshi uses his sticky tongue to pull opponents towards him. This was used in order to trap Metallix with his Egg Lay move. This attack is based on Scorpion's move from the Mortal Kombat series.
  • Egg Lay - Using his tongue, Yoshi grabs an opponent, swallows them and lays an egg with the opponent trapped inside of it. The technique first appeared in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island but was named in Super Smash Bros. Yoshi first used it in an attempt to stop Metallix during their battle, but failed as Metallix quickly broke free from the egg Yoshi produced.

Trivia[]

    • In SMBZ, Yoshi serves as an analogue to Piccolo from the Dragon Ball series.
  • Yoshi's tongue grab shares the same sound effect as Scorpion's Spear from the Mortal Kombat series.
  • In Super Mario Bros. Z, Yoshi's backstory appears to be more defined compared to the ambiguity found in the Mario franchise. In Yoshi's Island DS, the ending hints at a connection between a newly-hatched Baby Yoshi and the Yoshi later rescued by the grown-up Mario Bros. in Super Mario World. However, Nintendo has never officially confirmed whether this is the same Yoshi. In SMBZ, the clarification comes with the introduction of the Yoshi Chief, who is revealed to be the same Yoshi that assisted the Mario Bros. in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. This revelation establishes two separate prominent green Yoshi characters within the SMBZ canon. It's important to note that SMBZ is a fan-made creation and not officially endorsed by Nintendo, so it's considered unofficial media and, therefore, non-canon to the Mario series. However, within the context of SMBZ, it can be considered canon to its own storyline and universe.
