Super Mario Bros. Z is a British fan-made flash-animated web series created by Mark Haynes. It is a crossover between the Super Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog franchises, while incorporating elements from the Dragon Ball Z series. The series follows Mario joining forces with Sonic the Hedgehog to prevent Turbo Mecha Sonic from collecting the seven Chaos Emeralds and destroying the world.

The series ran from April 22, 2006 before eventually being canceled on March 30, 2012. The series consists of a total of 8 episodes, with the ninth being released in an incomplete state alongside the announcement of the series’ cancellation. The series would later be rebooted, with its first episode releasing on January 8, 2016. On March 7, 2020, the original 2006 series eventually received a 4K remaster featuring Dolby audio support. However, the aspect ratio of the original release was untouched.

Super Mario Bros. Z has garnered a generally positive reception, with its fast-paced action sequences being a particular point of praise. The series has become highly influential in the sprite animation community, with many creators citing the series and Haynes as an influence to their work. Newgrounds founder, Tom Fulp, has also praised the series, even going as far as to raise the site’s upload limit to allow the eighth episode to be uploaded on the site.

Unrealized and Cut Content[]

Various details regarding the plans for Super Mario Bros. Z's story were revealed by its creator, Mark Haynes over the years, both during production and after its cancellation. This includes characters who were planned to appear, events in the story, and even plans that extended beyond the Mecha Sonic Saga.

Characters[]

Wart[]

Wart Opening

Wart as he appears in the opening animation.

Wart is a large, green frog who acts as the main antagonist of Super Mario Bros. 2. He is the leader of the 8-Bit Crew, a group that had attempted to conquer Subcon, a world that exists within dreams. He was planned to appear as an antagonist within Super Mario Bros. Z and was even featured within the series' opening animation alongside a group of Ninjis. However, due to the 2006 series' cancellation, he never appeared in the series proper. It is speculated that he would have been featured in the episodes The Ninja Ninjis and Siege of Subcon, due to the titles of the episodes including names closely associated with him.

In the 2015 series, King K. Rool has replaced Wart as an antagonist in the reboot series. When asked about Wart's replacement, Mark explained that many people brought up the point of Subcon being a dream world. He added that the story he had in place for the heroes reaching Subcon lacked logic.[1] In addition, he later stated he had come up with a better story involving King K. Rool and the Kremling Krew than the one he had planned with Wart. There are currently no plans to include Wart in Super Mario Bros. Z in any capacity.[2]

Mona[]

Mona is a supporting character from the WarioWare series. She is one of Wario's original employees and microgame programmers. An unnamed writer that Mark collaborated with had suggested a storyline where Mecha Sonic destroys Diamond City and murders the entire cast of WarioWare with the exception of Mona. Shadow would later find her and nurse her back to health, with the two joining forces in an attempt to defeat Mecha Sonic. She would have attained a dark form from the trauma of these events, described as having black hair and white pale skin. Being in what Mark described as a vulnerable moment in his life, he almost accepted the idea, but in the end, rejected it and ceased his partnership with the writer.[3]

The Star Spirits[]

The Star Spirits are a group of seven powerful stars who first appeared in Paper Mario. The group consists of Eldstar, Mamar, Skolar, Muskular, Misstar, Klevar, and Kalmar. Together, they watch over the Star Rod, a magic wand able to make any wish come true. The stars were each captured and held captive by Bowser's forces, after Bowser stole the Star Rod and transformed the group into playing cards. The Star Spirits appear in the intro of the 2006 series, but never appeared in the series proper. As shown in the intro, they would have assisted the heroes in transforming into their Superstar forms to combat Mecha Sonic after he had collected all seven Chaos Emeralds. Due to the episode entitled, "The Pit of 100 Trials", it was theorized that the heroes would have had to successfully traverse through the episode's namesake to prove themselves worthy of their power. [citation needed]

The Master, Chan, and Lee[]

The Master, and his disciples, Chan and Lee, are three minor characters who appeared in Paper Mario. In the game, The Master ran a dojo where Mario could challenge Chan, Lee, and later, The Master himself. Few details regarding their appearance in Super Mario Bros. Z exist, aside from that they would have allegedly played a similar role to Hercule from Dragon Ball Z. However, due to this role seemingly being filled by Rawk Hawk in the reboot series, it is unlikely that The Master, Chan, and Lee will make an appearance. Their replacement likely stems from The Master serving as Paper Mario's super-boss, being stronger than even Bowser with the Star Rod, and was unsuited to act as a parallel to Hercule. It may have been possible that the three were instead supposed to play roles similar to that of King Kai, Bubbles and Gregory, due to their nature as martial arts masters. [citation needed]

Chaos[]

Chaos is the guardian god of the Chao and the main antagonist of Sonic Adventure. Few details of Chaos' appearance in Super Mario Bros. Z have been disclosed. Chaos was intended to play the role of the main antagonist of a movie following the events of the Mecha Sonic Saga.

Geno[]

Geno (real name: ♡♪!?) is a warrior from Star Road who appeared in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. He was sent by a "higher authority" to restore peace to Mario's world after Smithy invaded the Mushroom Kingdom and shattered the Star Road. He joined Mario to assist in his battle against Smithy. Little is known about Geno's appearance in Super Mario Bros. Z outside of the fact that he would have appeared during the Smithy Saga, as an addition to the team of heroes.

Mallow[]

Mallow is a Nimbus, a species of cloud-like people, and the de jure prince of Nimbus Land. He appears in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars as the first party member to join Mario in his battle against Smithy. Little is known about Mallow's planned appearance in Super Mario Bros. Z, aside from that like Geno, he would have debuted in the Smithy Saga, as an addition to the team of heroes.

Axem Blue[]

Axem Blue is a fan-made character created by Mark Haynes. Little is known about Axem Blue, outside of the fact that he would have appeared in the planned Smithy Saga, and would have been constructed using the remains of Mecha Sonic after his eventual defeat.[4] The sprites of Axem Blue that circulated online depicted him as being an edited version of Zero's sprites from Megaman X4 with his head being a recolored version of Axem Red's head from Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. While he has been planned to appear in the reboot's own Smithy Saga, it is not yet known what he will look like.

Mr. L[]

Mr. L was a brainwashed alter ego of Luigi that appeared during the events of Super Paper Mario. This alter-ego was planned to appear in Super Mario Bros. Z in a role similar to Gohan's superhero persona, the Great Saiyaman, from Dragon Ball Z. However, it is unknown when Mr. L would have been utilized in the series. [citation needed]

Rosalina[]

Rosalina is a supporting character from Super Mario Galaxy. She resides on the Comet Observatory, where she acts as the guardian of the Luma, a star-like species, and protector of the cosmos. The details of her planned appearance in Super Mario Bros. Z are entirely unknown, outside of the fact that she would have appeared in the third and final saga of the series. [citation needed]

Unrealized Story Plans[]

After announcing Super Mario Bros. Z's cancellation, Mark Haynes released a complete list of planned episode titles for the entirety of the Mecha Sonic Saga. Though the series was originally planned for only 15 episodes [5], Haynes' plans revealed a total of 18 episodes. The titles for the episodes are as follows:

  • EP 1: Bowser's Return
  • EP 2: Warriors from Another Dimension
  • EP 3: The New Threat
  • EP 4: Here Comes the Koopa Bros
  • EP 5: Troubles on Yoshi's Island
  • EP 6: Brawl on a Vanishing Island
  • EP 7: Secret of the Pipe Maze
  • EP 8: The Great Doomship Offensive
  • EP 9: The Two Shell Treaty
  • EP 10: Mario Clash
  • EP 11: The Ninja Ninjis
  • EP 12: Siege of Subcon
  • EP 13: Metallix is Born
  • EP 14: Darkness Within
  • EP 15: The Pit of 100 Trials
  • EP 16: The Tournament Begins
  • EP 17: True Power Unleashed
  • EP 18: I Am Chaos!!!

Additionally, he revealed details on plot developments that were planned for the Mecha Sonic Saga and his plans beyond it. These details include:

Mecha Sonic would have eventually collected all seven Chaos Emeralds and assume his perfect form, Metallix. After achieving this form, he would have hosted a fighting tournament in a similar vein to the Dragon Ball Z antagonist, Cell. By utilizing the power of the Star Spirits, the heroes would have managed to defeat Metallix. Due to unknown reasons, the Chaos Emeralds would no longer be a part of the series. Sonic and Shadow would then decide to continue living in the Mushroom Kingdom in the aftermath of the battle.

Following the events of the Mecha Sonic Saga would have been a movie featuring the character, Chaos, as the main antagonist.

Succeeding the events of the Chaos movie, the Smithy Saga would begin. Smithy, the main antagonist of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars would have returned, bringing the Axem Rangers X back to life while creating a new member of the group, Axem Blue. Axem Blue would have been constructed with Metallix's remains after his defeat. The characters, Geno and Mallow, party members from Super Mario RPG, would have appeared as new heroes. Wario and Waluigi would have allegedly played a more significant role in this saga, after primarily serving as comic relief in the Mecha Sonic Saga. After the Smithy Saga, a second movie would have succeeded it. However, no details about it were revealed.

A third and final saga would follow after the Smithy Saga. No details about it are known, other than that Rosalina may have played a role in it. After this saga's conclusion, one final movie would succeed it, bringing the series to its conclusion.

Trivia[]

  • Mark Haynes had originally planned to use sprites from Super Mario World for Mario and Luigi, but decided against it after deciding that sprites from Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga looked better side-by-side with the sprites from the Sonic Advance games and Sonic Battle. [6]
